Weirs

Calculators

Weirs are typically used as flow control structures; other applications include flow measurement and monitoring. Several different kinds of weirs exist including:

  1. Rectangular weirs (see Rectangular Contracted Weir Calculator )medium_weirCalculator.png
  2. V-notch (or triangular weirs)
  3. Proportional weirs (or Suttro weirs)
  4. Trapezoidal (or Chipoletti weirs)
  5. Long-crested weir (or duck bill weir)
  6. Compound weir
  7. Side Flow weir
  8. Transverse weir
  9. Ogee weir

The sheet of liquid falling over the opening of weir is called the nappe. Modifications of the above general categories of weirs typically used to describe variations of rectangular weirs include: a) sharp-crested weirs b) broad-crested weirs c) contracted weirs d) suppressed weirs
